National Diabetes Awareness Month

National Diabetes Awareness Month

November is National Diabetes Awareness Month, so this is an opportune time to learn more about the connection between diabetes and your oral health. Diabetes is more common than you may think. In fact, almost 10%, or 30 million people, living in the United States have diabetes, and studies suggest another 8 million people don’t know they have it.

What is Diabetes?

Diabetes is a disease that affects your body’s ability to process sugar, resulting in high blood sugar levels. Over time, this can lead to complications involving the eyes, nerves, kidneys, heart, and extremities. Additionally, if left untreated, diabetes can also negatively impact your oral health.

Diabetes and Your Oral Health

Researchers agree that there is an increased prevalence of gingivitis and periodontitis (gum disease) among individuals with diabetes. People with diabetes are more susceptible to bacterial infections. Symptoms of untreated diabetes include: dry mouth, inflamed and bleeding gums, diminished ability to taste food, and delayed wound healing.

So, what can you do? Your dentist understands that diabetics have unique needs and are well-equipped to be part of your healthcare team.  Be sure to share your complete health history with your dental provider, and provide an updated list of medications.

Here are some important additional steps you can take:

  • Control your blood glucose levels, as this is key to preventing and managing oral health problems.
  • Brush well twice a day with a soft-bristled toothbrush and floss regularly to remove plaque and food particles.
  • Schedule routine dental checkups at least twice per year. Some insurance plans may even allow for a third exam for those with diabetes.
  • Remove and clean dentures daily, and inform your dentist if they make your gums irritated or sore.
  • Quit smoking, as this negatively affects your overall health and can worsen gum disease as well.

The dentists and hygienists at Norge Dental Center provides regular cleanings and exams. If you have periodontal disease, you may require a deep cleaning, or you may be referred to a periodontist for specialized treatment, including gum surgery. Your dentist may also prescribe a special mouth rinse for your teeth and gums, as well as a special solution for cleaning your dentures.

Your dental team will partner with you to ensure you have the healthiest mouth possible—just make sure you do your part too!
