Back to School, Back to Healthy Smiles

It’s hard to believe it’s already back to school time! Backpacks are packed, lunches are being made, and families are getting back into their school year routines.

We know how busy this time of year can be. Between school, homework, sports, activities, and everything else on the calendar, dental care may not always be at the top of the list.

At Norge Dental Center, we want to help make keeping your family’s smiles healthy a little easier. Here are a few simple dental tips to keep in mind as everyone heads back to school.

Start the School Year With a Dental Checkup

Back to school is a great time to make sure your child is up to date on their dental visits.

Regular checkups give us a chance to clean those hard to reach areas, check for cavities, and make sure everything looks healthy as your child grows.

Schedules tend to fill up quickly once school gets started, so if your child is due for a visit, now is a great time to get it on the calendar.

Keep Brushing Part of the Routine

School mornings can be a little chaotic. Someone can’t find their shoes, lunches still need to be packed, and suddenly it’s time to walk out the door.

In all the morning craziness, don’t forget about brushing!

Kids should brush for two minutes, twice a day with fluoride toothpaste. Brushing in the morning and again before bed is an easy routine to stick with, even when the rest of the day gets busy.

For younger kids, brushing your teeth together can be a simple way to help them build good habits.

Pack Foods That Are Good for Their Smile

When you’re packing school lunches, try adding a few foods that are good for their teeth too.

Fresh fruits and vegetables, cheese, yogurt, and other nutritious foods are all great options. Water is also a great choice to send along instead of sugary drinks.

Of course, every lunchbox doesn’t have to be perfect. Small choices throughout the week can make a difference.

Playing Sports? Protect That Smile

If your child plays sports, a mouthguard is one item you don’t want to forget.

Mouthguards can help protect the teeth, lips, cheeks, and gums during sports and other activities where bumps and falls can happen.

We love seeing our patients involved in the activities they enjoy, and we definitely want to help keep those smiles protected while they’re doing it!

Think About After School Snacks

We all know the first question when kids get home from school.

“What can I have for a snack?”

Keeping a few easy options on hand can make snack time a little more tooth friendly. Fresh fruit, vegetables, cheese, nuts when age appropriate, and yogurt are all good choices.

And when they’re thirsty, water is always a good option.

Here’s to a Great School Year!

At Norge Dental Center, we love getting to know the families we care for and watching our younger patients grow year after year.

As everyone gets settled into a new routine, it’s a good time to make sure dental care is part of it too.

If your child is due for a cleaning or checkup, give our office a call. We’d love to see you!
