Toothbrush Matchup: Quip v. Sonicare
Ready to change up your brushing routine with a new, electric toothbrush? We support it. The New Year is the perfect time to step up your toothbrush game. There’s nothing wrong with a traditional, handheld toothbrush, an electric one can provide additional benefits—like a deeper, more thorough cleaning.
When our patients ask us to weigh in on electric toothbrush options, more often than not, they’re considering options from Quip or Sonicare. So, we’re giving you the highlights of each to help you decide which is right for you. While these are some of the most popular brands, remember there are tons of other great options on the market, too.
We love that Quip offers a customizable subscription option, making it easy to remember to change out your brush head every three months. You can also add other items, like fluoride toothpaste and floss, to keep your bathroom drawers stocked.
Quip’s price is hard to beat, starting at just $25 for the electric toothbrush. You can also upgrade to a $40 option that includes access to the Quip app for tracking your brushing habits and earning rewards.
Compared to other electric toothbrush options, Quip is compact and lightweight. Because it uses batteries, you won’t need to find space for a special charging station. (You will, however, need to swap out batteries about every three months.)
Not as sophisticated as higher-end electric toothbrushes
Unlike other electric toothbrushes, the bristles of Quip toothbrushes do not actually spin or vibrate. To get a thorough clean with Quip, we still recommend using a back and forth motion, like you would with a traditional toothbrush.
Quip’s line of toothbrushes and products appeals to the minimalist, meaning there aren’t as many choices when it comes to bristles and brush heads. For folks that prefer softer bristles, or smaller shapes, other brands offer more options.
Pros:
Sonicare toothbrushes use a special pulsing and vibration technology that’s proven to clean teeth effectively. When it comes to quality and sophistication, Sonicare is a winner.
From a range of different brush heads and different settings to target different needs, Sonicare toothbrushes are all about choice. Unlike cheaper options, Sonicare gives you room to customize your brushing experience, depending on the price of the brush you choose.
The Philips Sonicare brand has been trusted and recommended by dentists for years. The brand seems to be constantly innovating to bring better, smarter solutions for clean, healthy teeth.
Cons:
The true Sonicare toothbrushes start at $40 but can be as much as $400 depending on the model. Like Quip, Sonicare offers a monthly subscription package that sends you new brush heads every three months, but the fees are more expensive, ranging from $8.99 to $32.99 per month, depending on the toothbrush.
With the exception of one smaller portable option, most Sonicare toothbrushes are rechargeable. As a result, they require a small charging stand. If you’re the type of person who prefers throwing your toothbrush in a drawer, the counter space requirement could be a con.
You can’t go wrong with either of these popular brands. Both Quip and Sonicare offer great toothbrush options. The best toothbrush for you depends on your preferences, health goals, and budget. If you’re not sure which option makes the most sense for you, talk to your dentist or hygienist. Ultimately, brushing well for two minutes twice a day is more important than the toothbrush you choose.

February is National Children’s Dental Health Month. It’s a great reminder for parents and kids alike of the importance of pediatric dental care. It may surprise you to learn that tooth decay is the most common childhood chronic disease in the country. In fact, more than half of kids between six and eight years old have had a cavity in their primary, or baby, teeth. While a little cavity might not sound like a big deal, poor dental health is actually linked to higher rates of missed days and lower performance at school. Healthy teeth matter more than you might think!

We’ll answer that and other questions we receive about this common dental treatment.
Read MoreThird molars, or so-called wisdom teeth, often get a bad rap. That’s probably because people talk about them mostly in the context of people getting them removed. For many patients, wisdom tooth extraction is the only surgical dental procedure they have ever experienced. But wisdom teeth themselves aren’t necessarily bad. In fact for some patients, they’re just like other teeth. So what’s the big deal with wisdom teeth anyway? And, why do so many people have them extracted? Let’s take a look at some of the most common questions we hear about this infamous set of teeth.
