Teeth Whitening: Hydrogen Peroxide does it really work?

Interesting: never buy white strips again!: dip q-tip in hydrogen peroxide (the key ingredient in whitestrips) and apply to surface of teeth for 30 sec before brushing teeth) once a day for a few days. Teeth will look whiter in 2 days.

According to Dr. Johnston:

Putting plain hydrogen peroxide on your teeth to whiten them won’t do much good, and may do some harm.

Here’s the deal: What dentists give you to put in your whitening trays is called Carbamide Peroxide, which, once it gets exposed to air, breaks down into hydrogen peroxide. It’s this breaking down that does the whitening work, along with being in contact with your teeth for a few hours each day.

Dipping a q-tip in hydrogen peroxide and touching your teeth with it doesn’t have the chemical “punch” to really do much of anything with the tooth.

However, at the strength of hydrogen peroxide that you buy in the store, you can really give your self a nasty chemical burn on the gums… so be careful.
